About Margaret Henderson Margaret Henderson (neé Doyle), possessed of a beautiful speaking voice, was the first woman announcer on the ABC. She married George Henderson, pastoralist and (in his will) substantial benefactor of Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They lived throughout the war at Urisino Station, 250 kilometres west of Bourke, NSW. After the war they made their home in the country near Blayney NSW, where they established an outstanding garden and enjoyed entertaining both city and country friends. From this base they were able to travel frequently and widely, indulging their mutual passion for music, particularly opera and 18th-19th century chamber music. When deteriorating health confined Margaret to a nursing home in Sydney she established a fund to provide small assistance grants to needy undergraduate students at Sydney Conservatorium; in appreciation the students used to present short concerts to the nursing home residents. Margaret and her fellow-residents so enjoyed these concerts that the Margaret Henderson Trust was established in her name to assist serious young musicians from the region in which she and George had spent their most creative years to pursue advanced music studies in the most inspiring conditions available.
